How to Choose a Murder Mystery

Make sure the character you decide for the murder mystery is appropriate for you, your partner and your audience. Depending on the age of your guests, probably you'll need two characters to play the Wonder, the Ludlunny etc. If you are working with a relatively small group they may be best played by a single character or not play at all! Cast, regardless of the characters should be around the same size.

Ideally you want the Murder Mystery party guest list to be a group of roughly similar size (12-15 unless otherwise stated) but if this isn't possible chance! We'll be working with larger groups and trying to provide as many characters for all guests, but you can compromise on size if necessary.

2 - 2 hour notice It's recommended that you give guests 2 hours notice prior to a murder mystery party. This will give you time to organise your party guests and may also give you time to organise other elements of the event such as catering/perishable food. If the venue is suitable it may be advisable to consider a themed party where one or two murder mysteries can be played in an evening. This can reduce the cost of general party supplies and can add burn-out factor to the party. 3 - Your murder mystery, a plot and a body So assuming you have the right characters for you game and notice the factor, let's continue. As a crime scenario, you can choose your plot, the characters involved and the scene of the crime to be played. Most tests come with instructions and outlines, but check with your retailer as they should be able to supply you with a complete set. They may need to know the exact location of a body, so bear this in mind when you're choosing your murder mystery plot. 4 - Your clues and the murder Mystery itself Clues should act as your guide to the murder mystery you've chosen. There should be a plot, characters and a mystery that you've chosen to play. Because it's a mystery, generally the main challenge is in deciding what and what not to say. Make it interesting! 5 - The venue Consider the size it will be at the venue to create your party games (some games will take longer than others) and remember to plan seating for your guests. If you have a large number of guests it may be necessary to hire seating or if you are holding an impromptu event, have a number of people ready to help you. 6 - Lighting and background music Always work with the background musicleave background music until the very end once the actors are involved. Some activity or food games may need to be played during the lunch hours to hold excitement until lunch time. Playing a murder mystery is a great way to break the ice and get guests talking to each other. 9 - Looting the murder Depending on your guests, eliminates some characters and give some to the remaining actors so that they are not totally taken out of the mystery plot. Rather than invite all fifteen deceased characters the clues sometimes want to reveal a number then leave that decision up to the guests. 10 - Enlist your friends in to help you plan Bring your friends who are good at Crisis necessity such as general knowledge, calendars or coordinates or even to assist in the writing process. So when it gets down to it, invite six to ten guests and then they can choose a character, prepare and set up their costumes etc. as per your keepsake murder mystery rules. Of course if you want to have a mystery where more than ten guests have to make it out then you'll have to work with the number of characters you invite. Hosting a mystery party is fun and a great way to add to your life but by planning well in advance you will ensure that your party will be well received and all your hard work will pay off in the end.
